The audio-visual essay explores human imaginative, non-actual, participation in the experience of events, enabled by technological mediation. The audio-visual speculation presents the experiential state of the ‘spectator of the world’, as the individual uses devices as interfaces to access various types of information, with the intent of depicting the dynamics of such spectatorship.
Considering the advent of digital media and of the Internet, specifically the globally networked infrastructure built on computational technology, individuals become spectators of a globalized world of events. They are enabled access to multimedia data from all over the world, through different devices, which can ‘tap in’ and ‘surf’ the networked cyberspace. The promise of remote access enacts a participatory spectatorship of situations and events around the world, yet it is not an actual experience, but rather a virtual (non-actual) one, where the spectator is a passive witness of a mediated experience.
‘Vicarious Presence’ rather than focusing on the passive experience of the spectator, focuses on the digitally mediated situations configured as an information overload, resulting from the entanglement of images, sounds and text. Thus the protagonist is not the spectator itself, as he is enclosed, framed-in by the multi-media configuration that enacts an imagined (non-actual) participation in the experience of others, or the remote experience of situations around the world. In other words, the protagonist is the technological configuration that mediates experience and its way of operating such mediation.
